Constipation Symptoms, Causes and Natural Remedies



Constipation is a common symptom where a person has difficulty passing hard feces. It is not a disease but can be a frustrating problem for many people. Constipation is generally defined as having less than three bowel movements in a week. Having at least one or two bowel movements per day is indication that person has healthy body. If the food moves through the gastro-intestinal tract too slowly, the colon may absorb too much water which results in feces that are dry and hard. Symptoms include straining, infrequent bowel movements, hard stools and just feeling like your bowels are not emptied after a movement.

Smokers who cease smoking can also experience constipation since nicotine has a laxative effect.

You should treat constipation by dietary changes. Healthy diet is really critical for preventing constipation. Start using high-fiber diet which consist of fresh fruits, green vegetables, whole grains, nuts and seeds. This is the long term constipation remedy. Limit alcohol and caffeine intake and drink plenty of water, fruit or vegetable juices through the day. You can also mix one teaspoon of honey in one cup of lukewarm water and drink it regularly in the morning before breakfast.

If the symptoms persist for more than 3 months at least 3 days per month then we can call it chronic constipation. When associated with abdominal discomfort chronic constipation is often diagnosed as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Chronic constipation requires medical help so visiting doctor is highly advisable. In some cases the use of laxatives may be necessary (such as in people in whom dietary or other interventions are not effective or are inappropriate) but should be used with caution and only as necessary.

It is important to remember that constipation is usually easier to prevent than to treat so healthy life-stye and diet is the best way to fight possible constipation.
